Pre&Post gym snacks

I have a terrible habit of being starving as soon as I get home from work, and then later on I don’t want to eat once I’ve got back from the gym. Working out on an empty stomach isn’t great, and not eating after the gym wouldn’t be something I’d recommend, so here are a few of my favourite snacks for when I need to eat but don’t want too much:

Protein Pancakes with almond butter & apple sauce
I used to make these with protein powder, egg and banana, but have since moved on to a pancake mix from MyProtein. 50g of pancake powder, 100ml water and 3g coconut butter in a hot pan, then smother the hot pancake with almond butter first, then a layer of organic apple sauce. The perfect blend of protein, carbs and fats for about 400 cals.

Greek yogurt, fruit & nut butter
This works with pretty much anything you can throw in a bowl with greek yogurt, whether thats fresh berries, stewed fruit, cacao nibs, banana, nuts and seeds or dairy free chocolate drops. Everything in moderation makes it the ideal mix of everything you need to fuel before a workout, or refuel when you get home. Yum.

Scrambled eggs & pancetta
Non-stick pans have changed my life, and mean that only on rare occasions do we ever use any oil to cook anymore (the pancakes above are one such example.) Cooking scrambled eggs this way means they’re slightly drier than normal, but thats how I like them, and they end up easier to eat. Crispy pancetta doesn’t feel as heavy as bacon, and adds a salty tang that doesn’t feel like you’re eating junk.

Steak & Greens
A post-gym favourite in our house – beef or venison steak cooked medium rare with a side of either asparagus or broccoli, which provides enough energy to stave off DOMS, but not so much that you’re bouncing off the walls before bed.

Peanut butter & Banana wrap
This is best suited for pre-gym, as my boyfriend and I once shared these before bed and didn’t sleep a wink because of the buzz. Wholewheat mini wraps half smothered with meridian crunchy peanut butter and sliced banana, fold over into a cresent and give it a good squish to meld everything together. Also works with any kind of nut butter, and a drizzle of raw honey helps before a particularly punishing morning workout.
