When I was younger, my Mum took herself, my brother, and I to see one of the most ludicrous men I’ve ever met in my life. We all went to see a nutritionalist by the name of Mr Galambos, who told us all we were allergic to all of our favourite foods, and should immediately stop eating them. He was also unintentionally hilarious, largely as a result of his flip-down glasses, thick accent and total lack of patience for our giggles.
We largely ignored his expensive and expert advice, but he’d flagged up in each one of us that we were lactose intolerant. It affects us in varying degrees – my brother sneezes, my mum feels queasy, and my belly goes rock hard. We collectively gave up milk – me: almond milk, mum: Lactofree, and my brother: sheer stubbornness, but couldn’t loosen our grip on things like cheese or ice cream. They were just too tasty.
Since joining the gym and trying to get fitter, I’ve been looking for ways to get more protein in my diet. Thus far, my two winners have been protein shakes and greek yoghurt (aside from the usual things like eggs, fish, chicken etc). But recently I’ve noticed that my body isn’t very happy with me. At all.
The body I wake up in is totally different to the one I go to sleep in. Whatever it is I’m eating, it’s causing havoc with my insides and blowing me up like a little piglet balloon. The photo above was taken far too close together for it to be me being a lard arse.
I immediately thought the culprit was dairy, and started cutting it out full stop, turning to soya protein powder (tastes like shit) and taking lactase enzymes again, and it seems to have worked to some extent. However, I’m not sure if something else might be to blame, seeing as the change has occurred quite rapidly over the past fortnight.
The only other major change to my diet (besides that pack of biscuits the other day..) is that I’ve started to take supplements. Over the counter, fish oil and general health type supplements, but still, maybe they’re what’s causing the damage? The trouble with them is, I’m keen to give them a go for at least a few weeks to see if they improve my tone, fitness, health, so I’m reticent to give them up immediately.
Anyone else had any trouble with supplements or protein powder? I’m keen to get this fixed without resorting to paying for advice if I can find it online!
