Last month, in a freak treadmill incident, I ran 5km for the first time. I wanted to do it in under 30 minutes on my first go, but missed it by six seconds when I couldn’t get the treadmill speed dials to work quick enough.
Buoyed by that success, I took my distance back down to 3.2km every day, safe in the knowledge that I had a 5km in my back pocket if I ever needed to call on it again. Since then I’ve been slowly building my distance back up, first to 4km, then 4.3km, then 5.3km the other day (even though it didn’t sync to Strava because I accidentally toggled airplane mode on right before I pressed start. ‘Saaaaaaaake!)
Knowing I can do this, my next milestone will be three complete laps round the block, which will take me up to just under 6.5km – I might be able to lengthen it by weaving in and out between cars on the last leg!
Which brings me on to the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever spent £28 on. I signed up to do the Nike Women’s 10km event in London in June. What was I thinking?! I’ve never run 10km in my life! 10km is five times round the block, and I definitely get bored after about two – I’m genuinely worried that boredom, not fatigue, is going to be the thing that most hinders my progress during training runs.
I’ve got about 3 months to go before the big day, so I’m aiming to add a km and a bit on to my distance every month between now and then in the hope that I can be comfortably covering it for at least 5-10 runs before I tackle the Nike event. Then again, I might just have to hit (the track) and hope on the day.
And if it all goes to pot and I either don’t finish the race or don’t even get to the start line, at least I’ll get a free Nike top out of it, which seems like a total bargain for £28..
